General Information about Isfahan

Isfahan (Esfahan) city is located about 430km south of Tehran in a relatively mountainous area of the Zagros chain. It is cited in the main north-south and east-west intersections of Iran, stretching along Zayandeh Rood river. From 1592 to 1722, Isfahan was the capital of Persia and in the delightful sing-song accents of the natives, you can hear them whisper “Nesf-e-Jahan”, which means “Half of The World”.

Chehel Sotoun, literally meaning forty columns, has been graced by royals since the 1600s which was a site for entertainment and receiving international guests. The name is associated with its 20 wooden columns at the entrance that gets doubled when reflected in the long pool in front of it.

The shaking Minarets, or Menar-e Jonban, is a great highlight of Isfahan that makes you astonished in this city tour. Its construction began in the 14th century, and by shaking one minaret, the other one will resemble the movements as well.

The beautiful courtyard alleys of Bazar-e Bozorg (Grand Bazaar) which was constructed in the 11th century, is the highlight of Isfahan for finding great Iranian arts and handicrafts.

Iranian foods have become globally famous for their delicious taste. Isfahan local foods like Beryani, Jeweled Rice, Kaleh-Joosh, and Eshkeneh are the ones you shouldn’t forget to try.
